The house

Sea one way, hills the other.

You arrive whenever you arrive. There is no desk to check in at, no one to wait for, no queue behind a family of six — just a lockbox, a code sent before you travel, and a door that is yours for as long as you are here. Guests landing at eleven at night mention this more than anything else.

By the second morning it has its own rhythm. Coffee on the patio before the heat arrives, the doors open onto the garden, something on the gas stove in the evening because the fish at the market was too good to pass up. There is a washing machine for the middle of a long trip, air conditioning for the afternoons, and a desk by the window for anyone who has to work — all of it there when you want it and out of the way when you do not.

The garden at the back is what people are surprised by. Flowers, shade, and quiet enough to hear the birds rather than the road — one guest got engaged out there over a weekend. In the morning the light comes across the harbour; in the evening it goes down behind the hills.

Latoya hosts both houses herself. She replies within the hour, checks in without hovering, and tends to have sorted the thing before you have finished explaining it. It is what guests write about once they are home, and it is the part a hotel cannot really imitate.

The rest is where it puts you: Hellshire and its fish shacks ten minutes away, Port Royal across the water, Kingston up the causeway, the Blue Mountains beyond that, and the north coast a morning's drive. Go out for the day. Come back to your own front door.

The quiet one. People book three nights here and a surprising number of them ask to stay longer.

01

Let yourself in

A lockbox and a code sent before you travel, so a late flight or an early start is never a problem.

02

Sea one way, hills the other

Both from the patio — the harbour in the morning, the hills at sunset, and the beach ten minutes away.

03

Properly equipped

Gas stove, laundry, air conditioning, fast Wi-Fi and a desk. Everything is here for a long stay as much as a short one.

04

A garden to sit in

Flowers, shade, and quiet enough to hear birds rather than traffic. Somebody got engaged out there.
